The caves of Matata

Located at the edge of the Gironde estuary, in Meschers sur Gironde, the Matata Caves are a troglodyte complex dug by erosion and man in the heart of the limestone cliff, 65 million years ago.

The cliffs were in turn haunts of pirates and smugglers, places of refuge for Protestants, control and defense to protect the entrance to the Gironde, shelters for fishermen and open houses at the Belle Epoque.

The museum housed in the rooms of the ancient caves allows you to discover life in troglodytes from prehistory to the nineteenth century.
